What excites you most about competing at your first NFR? The fact that I’m actually going is exciting. Just getting to run down the alley at the Thomas & Mack. That is every little girl barrel racers dream. The whole experience is exciting.

What are you most nervous about competing at the NFR? When I’m actually driving to Vegas I guess it will become real that I get to run there. I don’t get that nervous and riding Dillon I feel comfortable. Having my dad there walking me in I’m hoping it will feel like just another rodeo. But, I’ve been told it is very loud there so we’ll see.

Do you have someone else that assists you in preparing your horse or yourself for NFR competition? (such as another horse trainer, a sports psychologist, personal physical trainer?) No, Dillon is resting right now and I ride Arson about 3 times a week to keep him in shape and I will go to a couple of barrel races before leaving for NFR to get them running again. My dad is really good at keeping my horses sound. He’s probably at the barn more than I am.

How long does it take you to pack for the NFR? How many hats, boots, dresses? Do you pack for yourself or your horses first? It probably won’t take too long. I still have all of my things in my trailer and honestly I don’t have that many clothes. All of my saddles and tack are already in the trailer for the horses so mostly we’ll just have to load hay and grain.

Who will travel with you to Vegas to assist in taking care of your horses: Are any of these people related to you? My dad and our driver, Whiplash, and myself will be there to take care of the horses all the time. I was begging my vet to come out and I hope he might come out for a few days.

Do you have any “lucky charms” that you will take with you to Las Vegas?
No lucky charms but I am very superstitious. I have all the same gear on Dillon that I started riding him with except a pair of boots because they were so worn out the velcro wouldn’t stick anymore. And, like with my clothes, if I do well with the shirt I wear the first night I’ll wear it the next night. I won’t care. Hopefully, I’ll stay in the same outfit the whole time.

What are your thoughts about competing for a record amount of prize money at this year’s NFR? I can’t wait – how exciting!!!!!

What one piece of advice would you give to the first timer NFR qualifiers?
Stay focused about why you are there, as there is a lot that goes on!

How will you approach this year’s NFR differently than last year? I don’t ever try to change anything unless it is deemed necessary.

Do you have someone else that assists you in preparing your horse or yourself for NFR competition? I don’t have any other assistance, just my wonderful family that is just as excited to be going as I am and my amazing husband (who may also be considered my psychiatrist! Ha!).

How long does it take you to pack for the NFR? Do you pack for yourself or your horses first? I definitely pack for the horses first, and my “dress up” wardrobe is quite minimal. Lots of Cowgirl Tuff jeans and shirts!

Who will travel with you to Vegas to assist in taking care of your horses? My husband, Grady, will be with me, who is also my farrier. We are the “team”. Dr Swanson will actually be in Vegas some this year for other business, but is always just a phone call away regardless.

What excites you most about competing at your first NFR? Being able to run on my favorite horses for that much money in one arena for 10 nights against the toughest competition. I’ve watched the girls run every year on TV and now to run there is so exciting! It makes all the traveling throughout the year worth it.

What are you most nervous about competing at your first NFR? Ten nights in a row is a lot of runs and I’m sure it’s exhausting. I’m glad it’s a smaller pattern and that its indoors though! I know I’ll be nervous but that’s a part of it.

Do you have someone else that assists you in preparing your horse or yourself for NFR competition? The mental aspect of competing is just as important as the physical. I’m going to try and keep my horses and myself healthy and mentally prepared as possible. Being around my horses is my therapy so I know if I’m busy during the day, once I get to my horses that afternoon to get ready for our run I will be so excited. Bling loves competing as much as I do so once she gets in the alleyway all we can do is try our best and do what got us there. I’m glad we get to spend time at home before we go to Vegas. It’s very peaceful to be on the farm and I’m going to ride a lot of horses to stay in shape and stay ready to compete. I try to keep it as simple as possible because my job is to keep my horses healthy, happy, and to turn three barrels as fast as possible.

How long does it take you to pack for the NFR? Do you pack for yourself or your horses first? I usually pack the trailer first and then all of my clothes. I’m sure it will take a while to make sure I have everything but I will probably put it off until the last minute. I have to make sure I have my saddle, saddle pad, horse boots, bits, buckets, blankets, feed, hay, my cowgirl hats, boots, riding shirts, jeans, and my horses.

Who will travel with you to Vegas to assist in taking care of your horses? My family will be there to help keep an eye on my horses if I am busy and in case anything comes up. I’m so glad they are going to be there! While I’m on the road I send videos of my runs to my family. They know how I normally ride and how my horses run so it helps to have their opinion. I always re-watch my runs to see if there’s something I can try to improve or if it goes good something I can try to do again. My boyfriend, Wade Whatley, has traveled with me all year so he also is a big help with the horses. Jess Harper is going to help me keep my horses feeling great after each run with her therapy machines. Marcus Harden will be in Vegas for any chiropractor needs for Bling or Rose and they will both be shod by Dennis Rossignol before I head to Vegas.

Do you have any “lucky charms” that you will take with you to Las Vegas? Well I don’t want to jinx anything!

What are your thoughts about competing for a record amount of prize money at this year’s NFR? I am so excited that we get to compete for so much money. I see this as a big jump for the sport of rodeo. With the increase I see more contestants trying to qualify for the NFR.

What one piece of advice would you give to the first timer NFR qualifiers? My advice for first time qualifiers would be to take it day by day. The NFR is very overwhelming so just sit back and enjoy the ride.

Do you have someone else that assists you in preparing your horse or yourself for NFR competition? No one helps me get prepared for the Finals. I just work my horse at home and make sure he feels great.

How long does it take you to pack for the NFR? Do you pack for yourself or your horses first? It takes a couple of days to pack. I have 20 jeans I bring – 10 pair for 10 nights of competition and 10 for every day; 10 rodeo shirts and 10 daytime shirts, 2 pair of boots, 4 dress up outfits for Banquets, 3 hats, coats, Under Armour for the cold nights, coats of all different weights, and gloves. One never knows what Vegas weather will be like in December.

Who will travel with you to Vegas to assist in taking care of your horses? Christy Davidson takes care of my horses. Tanya Bartlett will be there for any veterinary care if I should need any. Bruce Anderson will take care of the shoeing. Jess Harper for all the massaging of the horses.

How will you approach this year’s NFR differently than last year? I hope to be prepared more this year. I am going to make sure my horse is a little sharper and myself. I am going to work Latte harder.

What was the hardest “daily chore” to get accomplished during previous trips to the NFR? What plans do you have to avoid the stress of it this coming year? The hardest daily chore was getting up so early for barrel practice. I won’t change anything about my daily routine.

What are your thoughts about competing for a record amount of prize money at this year’s NFR? It is such an exciting time for the contestants. I have been around a long time and it is exciting to see the growth in the sport.

What one piece of advice would you give to the first timer NFR qualifiers? Don’t look at your social media. You need to stay as focused as possible and not let outside influences affect you. Good or bad you need to stick to your own game plan and sometimes what you read on social media will cause you to start changing things.

Do you have someone else that assists you in preparing your horse or yourself for NFR competition? There’s no one else that helps me get the horses ready and as for myself, that is also a no. Getting myself in shape is my problem alone.

How long does it take you to pack for the NFR? Do you pack for yourself or your horses first? I start packing a little at a time about a week before but I tend to wait until the night before to finish it up. But, I really don’t recommend that.

Who will travel with you to Vegas to assist in taking care of your horses? Rhoda Bennon

How will you approach this year’s NFR differently than last year? I will keep my game plan the same. I want to win as much money as possible and am excited to be going back.

What was the hardest “daily chore” to get accomplished during previous trips to the NFR? What plans do you have to avoid the stress of it this coming year? The hardest thing is keeping everyone happy. It is easy to run out of time to spend with family, friends and sponsors. The sponsors are the most important when I’m there. It is the time of year to get in front of the fans and let them know who your endorsees are. I don’t stress about it. I just try to do the best I can with the time I have.

What are your thoughts about competing for a record amount of prize money at this year’s NFR? It’s great. Our horses only have so many runs in them so it is wonderful that we have an opportunity to run at that. I am very excited.

What one piece of advice would you give to the first timer NFR qualifiers? They just need to have plenty of help when they are there and be prepared.

Do you have someone else that assists you in preparing your horse or yourself for NFR competition? I married my trainer so I have an advantage. I don’t profess to be a trainer. I like competing and I try and ride well behind my trainer and do things that my horses are use to. I probably should go to a personal trainer for myself but I don’t.

How long does it take you to pack for the NFR? Do you pack for yourself or your horses first? It will take me a long time to pack for my horses because I’m pretty obsessed about making sure I have everything I need to take care of them. It won’t take me as long to pack for myself. My 8-year old granddaughter tells me she is going to have to pick out clothes for me. As long as my clothes are clean and pressed I’m good.

Who will travel with you to Vegas to assist in taking care of your horses? Fred (husband) who is also my shoer and my four sons will also be there to help. So, I’ll have free labor. They know the routine well and I have confidence in them. You know it takes a village to manage all the details and the busy schedule for that week. They will all take a shift. My vet is going to be there for a few days also.

How will you approach this year’s NFR differently than last year? Fred and I have put a lot of thought into it this year. We know we have to handle the ground there a little different, we have to manage time differently. We’ve put a little list together of things we need to change so we can run a little harder at it this year.

What was the hardest “daily chore” to get accomplished during previous trips to the NFR? What plans do you have to avoid the stress of it this coming year? Getting where you need to be on time and still getting your horse to the arena when you need to be there. That was stressful for me. This year my one son is going to be there to help us navigate all of that and help with the logistics of getting around Vegas the easiest and speediest way possible.

What are your thoughts about competing for a record amount of prize money at this year’s NFR? We are already excited to be at the NFR but to have qualified on a record breaking payout year is icing on the cake.

What one piece of advice would you give to the first timer NFR qualifiers? Take it all in…much like a wedding day. It’s stressful, exciting and is gone before you know it. Make a lot of memories.

Do you have someone else that assists you in preparing your horse or yourself for NFR competition? Definitely our chiropractor and sports therapist – Kelsey Braudrick. Since I had such a bad accident riding several years ago it takes Melissa the massage therapist and a chiro like three days a week to keep me in line, so I can do meet and greets and meet all the fans.

How long does it take you to pack for the NFR? Do you pack for yourself or your horses first? It takes two rigs to get me to the Finals because we have a booth. So two rigs, six people, and probably a month to pack. It is a lot.

Who will travel with you to Vegas to assist in taking care of your horses? My farrier, John Olivera, will travel with me. He is with Razer Horse and I am sponsored by them. My chiropractor, Kelsey Braudrick, with Flat Rock Chiropractic who takes care of my horses and myself.

How will you approach this year’s NFR differently than last year? I liked the outcome of last year, so I think I will stick with that strategy.

What was the hardest “daily chore” to get accomplished during previous trips to the NFR? What plans do you have to avoid the stress of it this coming year? Getting to and from all of my appearances is tough!

What excites you most about competing at your first NFR? I’m most excited about having my first grand entry. Everyone has told me that running down the alley at the Thomas & Mack is unreal and almost brings tears to your eyes.

What are you most nervous about competing at the NFR? My biggest worry is that I will not be where I am suppose to be when I am suppose to be there. It makes me nervous not knowing what to expect or finding the right locations for meetings and interviews.

Do you have someone else that assists you in preparing your horse or yourself for NFR competition? For my horses I do all the riding. I have been going to the gym everyday trying to get myself in the best shape possible . If I want my horses to be in the right shape, then I want to be in shape too. I know that it is going to be a long 10 days and you definitely don’t want to get worn out.

How long does it take you to pack for the NFR? Do you pack for yourself or your horses first? I would like to think not as long as it probably will but I guess at least a week. I’ll probably pack for myself and my horse at the same time.

Who will travel with you to Vegas to assist in taking care of your horses? My mom and dad will be there to help me and a few other family members will help some while I am out there. My vet will be in Vegas for a veterinary conference at that same time so if I get in a jam and need them I can call them.

If you could seek out advice from any NFR qualifier (in any event) about competing at the NFR for the first time who would it be, why did you choose that particular person and what would you ask them? Probably Trevor Brazile. He has proven that no matter what he can move on to the next event and the next day and win at the NFR.

What are your thoughts about competing for a record amount of prize money at this year’s NFR? I love the fact that we have an opportunity to make money at the finals, and I hope we get to see some of that prize money come back to Carmine.

What one piece of advice would you give to the first timer NFR qualifiers? You might try and tell yourself it is just another rodeo, but it is NOT. It’s the biggest best rodeo all year long and you qualified for your spot. Don’t try to down play the intensity of it. It’s a huge accomplishment, soak it all in and enjoy every second of it, because qualifying again is not guaranteed.

Do you have someone else that assists you in preparing your horse or yourself for NFR competition? I try to stick with what I have done all year long and not change too much.

How long does it take you to pack for the NFR? Do you pack for yourself or your horses first? I don’t pack all at one time, I just slowly start putting stuff in the trailer so it takes quite a while. I take 4 hats and 3 pairs of boots. I most definitely pack for Bo first, after all, he is the reason I am getting to go to Vegas.

Who will travel with you to Vegas to assist in taking care of your horses? My vet, Dr. Marty Tanner and farrier, Brad McGilchrist. Karen Richter will work on Bo using her Acuscope and Myopulse Machine. Personal Caregivers to care for Bo are my mom, Robyn Jacob, and I will be in charge of feeding and caring for Bo.

How will you approach this year’s NFR differently than last year? I am not planning on changing my approach from when I made it in 2013. I think my horse does best when I go at it each and every night, he is not a horse that you can try to play it “safe” on.

What was the hardest “daily chore” to get accomplished during previous trips to the NFR? What plans do you have to avoid the stress of it this coming year? I didn’t think anything was a “chore” or even “taxing” while being in Vegas. I counted my blessings every morning and thanked God that I was there. I enjoyed signing autographs and meeting people, it is so interesting to talk to people from all around the world with different stories and accomplishments.

What are your thoughts about competing for a record amount of prize money at this year’s NFR? I’m so excited to be running at so much each night this year at the NFR! It’s such an incredible opportunity and I’m so blessed to be able to do what I love.

What one piece of advice would you give to the first timer NFR qualifiers? My advice to a first time NFR qualifier is to just do what they have done all year. Do not change things just because it is the NFR.

Do you have someone else that assists you in preparing your horse or yourself for NFR competition? I have Ron and Patty Ralls, Jon Suttle and Jason Martin and Charlie Cole help me prepare for the NFR. I have been riding with Ron a lot and working on my horsemanship always striving to better my riding! It takes a village so we all discuss theories and opinions and throw ideas out there and it helps to get different opinions.

How long does it take you to pack for the NFR? Do you pack for yourself or your horses first? It takes a couple days to pack. I pack for the horses first! Then for myself. This year I have more hats thanks to Shorty’s Caboy Hats and I’m so excited about wearing these hats!!! I also have a lot of Tanner a Mark boots !!!

Who will travel with you to Vegas to assist in taking care of your horses? Katelyn my daughter will be helping with the horses also Dalton Titsworth, who is Lindsey’s (my daughter’s) boyfriend. Lindsey will be in Oklahoma City at the Futurity so she will not be able to go this year.

How will you approach this year’s NFR differently than last year? I’m trying to plan to have more fun activities with my friends and family!

What was the hardest “daily chore” to get accomplished during previous trips to the NFR? What plans do you have to avoid the stress of it this coming year? The daily chores of cleaning stalls and doing therapy on the horses is difficult because the practices are so early in the morning and then having to be ready for autograph signings.

What excites you most about competing at your first NFR? All the money that they have added this year. I’ve never competed for this much money!

What are you most nervous about competing at the NFR? Just the set up in general. The small pen, blind first barrel. I feel like I excel in big outdoor pens…so I will have to really prepare myself and my horses for this set up.

Do you have someone else that assists you in preparing your horse or yourself for NFR competition? Kelly Garrison and my Dad. They are the two trainers I respect the most and they keep both my horses and me sharp. Earlier in the year I kept getting popped back leaving the backside of the barrel. I could not figure out what was going on. I sent several videos to Kelly and asked her what she thought. She said let your stirrups out a hole. Even though it felt really weird at first, after I did that I started winning a lot more.

How long does it take you to pack for the NFR? Do you pack for yourself or your horses first? I haven’t even started packing yet…so hopefully not too long!

Who will travel with you to Vegas to assist in taking care of your horses? My vet Scott Martin will be there. My friend, Kelly Garrison, and my dad will be tending to my horses. My friend, Jess Harper with Hoof Beats will be doing various therapies on them daily.

If you could seek out advice from any NFR qualifier (in any event) about competing at the NFR for the first time who would it be, why did you choose that particular person and what would you ask them? Billy Etbauer. He’s a hero of mine, and he has won a ton in the Thomas and Mack. I would ask him how he remains so focused through all the ups and downs of the 10 days.

Do you have any “lucky charms” that you will take with you to Las Vegas? My aunt Rene will be there all 10 days. She seems to bring me good luck anytime she’s comes and watches, so I told her she had to be there all ten days!

What excites you most about competing at your first NFR? I am looking forward to running down the alley at the Thomas and Mack, it has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember.

What are you most nervous about competing at the NFR? I am most nervous about managing my time well, that is why I am leaving that to my mom. I know she will keep a schedule and have me where I need to be the whole time.

Do you have someone else that assists you in preparing your horse or yourself for NFR competition? My mom, Angela, has been there every step of the way for me and keeps my horses, as well as myself, in the best condition that she can.

How long does it take you to pack for the NFR? Do you pack for yourself or your horses first? Rock & Roll Cowgirl and Panhandle Slim are providing me with all of my clothes for the NFR, so I will have shirts and jeans for daytime and nighttime. I only wear one hat and I consider it lucky so it will be the hat I wear the whole time. My horses are well taken care of with new 5 Star saddle pads and RES boots on the way.

Who will travel with you to Vegas to assist in taking care of your horses? Jan Burns will be going with me to the finals to take care of my horses while I am signing autographs during the day. My mom and I will try to go to where they are staying as much as possible.

If you could seek out advice from any NFR qualifier (in any event) about competing at the NFR for the first time who would it be, why did you choose that particular person and what would you ask them? I think Trevor Brazile would probably be the best person to talk to about the NFR. He has qualified for years and could probably tell you everything you ever needed to know.

Do you have any “lucky charms” that you will take with you to Las Vegas? I wear a necklace that my mom gave me the day I turned 18, also the day I filled my permit, and I have not taken it off since.

What excites you most about competing at your first NFR? Ever since I was a little girl I said I was going to make the NFR. As I grew older I thought that chance was gone. It’s very exciting to have actually made it.

What are you most nervous about competing at the NFR? Modeling at the fashion show. I’ve heard we have to do that. Also, waiting in the alleyway to run that first night.

Do you have someone else that assists you in preparing your horse or yourself for NFR competition? No just family. My dad feeds at home while I am gone and my son helps with everything else. I work out myself a little bit every morning and my vet actually has given me some supplements to take to help me get myself in shape. He said, “We’ve got your horse in shape. Now we have to get you in shape too.”

How long does it take you to pack for the NFR? Do you pack for yourself or your horses first? Probably a couple of days at least. I’ve never had to pack for 14 days. And now they tell me I need to pack a dress. Never had to do that before when going to a rodeo. I’ll pack for my horse first.

Who will travel with you to Vegas to assist in taking care of your horses? My son, Colton ,will be my main help there. He rides bulls and broncs and also ropes steers and calves. He was the college Rocky Mountain Region all around two years ago.

If you could seek out advice from any NFR qualifier (in any event) about competing at the NFR for the first time who would it be, why did you choose that particular person and what would you ask them? I think Ann Thompson. She has made it to the Finals a couple of times and she has given me good advice all summer on the entering. Also, Jana Bean. She has been very helpful in telling me what to expect. Also, as time gets closer I will talk to Kelly Yates. I just need to know what to expect.

Do you have any “lucky charms” that you will take with you to Las Vegas? Not really. I’m just not taking any of my unlucky shirts.

What are your thoughts about competing for a record amount of prize money at this year’s NFR? It is amazing. It played a big part in motivating me to make it back to the NFR again this year.

What one piece of advice would you give to the first timer NFR qualifiers? Stay focused and try to get as much rest as possible. It’s hard to realize how exhausted you will get before the week is over.

Do you have someone else that assists you in preparing your horse or yourself for NFR competition? No, just my husband and I. And my son helps too. This is really a family affair for us and I think that is pretty neat.

How long does it take you to pack for the NFR? Do you pack for yourself or your horses first? I’ll probably be trying to pack for a couple of weeks. I always pack for the horses first.

Who will travel with you to Vegas to assist in taking care of your horses? My husband, Breck, will be there for support and my farrier; my son, Jim; my vet, David Dutton and Troy Brandenberg, horse therapist.

How will you approach this year’s NFR differently than last year? It will be somewhat easier just knowing a bit more of what to expect. I will change the scheduling of my (autograph) signing obligations some so they don’t all pile up on me at the end of the week. It is all overwhelming.

What was the hardest “daily chore” to get accomplished during previous trips to the NFR? What plans do you have to avoid the stress of it this coming year? I am all about my horses and I am always the one that takes care of my horses. During NFR week there are so many obligations that it is hard to relinquish some of that responsibility even if it is to my husband. It stresses me to not be hands on.

What are your thoughts about competing for a record amount of prize money at this year’s NFR? It’s pretty amazing to know there is that kind of money available to us. All year along we go along trying to stay ahead of the game money wise but this year it’s going to be extra tough knowing that the money available could be life changing for a lot of people.

What one piece of advice would you give to the first timer NFR qualifiers? I try to tell people to treat it like any other run. Don’t let it get to you just because it’s the NFR. If comes down to just 10 more runs. Don’t change what you’ve done all year.

Do you have someone else that assists you in preparing your horse or yourself for NFR competition? I pretty much take care of everything myself. I always travel by myself anyway and I have chiropractors, vets and shoers all over the country, so I have those people I can call on when I need them. But, mostly I do it all myself. As for keeping myself in shape, I don’t go to the gym or anything but my life is rodeo so I ride and work and walk a lot every day. I try to eat decent and keep in pretty decent shape. I don’t do anything different preparing for the NFR.

How long does it take you to pack for the NFR? Do you pack for yourself or your horses first? I live in my trailer so I don’t have to pack at all. I stay packed. All I really need to do is hook up and go.

Who will travel with you to Vegas to assist in taking care of your horses? I am traveling down to Vegas by myself. My vet will be there for a few days in the middle of the week and my farrier will be there at the end but mostly it will just be me. I will have a lot of friends coming in and out while I am down there so I will have help when I need it. But, I will stay where my horses are so mostly it will be me doing it myself.

Will you approach this year’s NFR differently than years previous? Nope, I’ll just take it one run at a time.

What was the hardest “daily chore” to get accomplished during previous trips to the NFR? What plans do you have to avoid the stress of it this coming year? Getting everything organized ahead of time is most important. I am pretty laid back and don’t get too stressed.
